A new meta-analysis of three randomized, placebo-controlled studies suggests that cannabidiol (CBD) extract could provide notable improvements for children and teens with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Reported benefits include enhanced social interaction and a reduction in disruptive behaviors.
According to Dr. Lara Cappelletti of São Camilo University Center and the University of São Paulo in Brazil, imbalances in the endocannabinoid system—a key network involved in regulating communication between cells—may play a role in ASD. “CBD may help restore equilibrium within this system, potentially easing core symptoms,” she explained in an interview with Medscape Medical News.
