Medications prescribed for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) appear to cause only modest changes in blood pressure and heart rate over several weeks to a few months, according to a systematic review and meta-analysis published in The Lancet Psychiatry.
Researchers emphasized the importance of routinely monitoring cardiovascular indicators—such as pulse and blood pressure—in all patients undergoing drug treatment for ADHD, not just those taking stimulant medications.
“This is especially important for clinicians who may believe that cardiovascular effects are limited to stimulant use,” noted Dr. Luis C. Farhat of the University of São Paulo in Brazil.
